Consumer magazines are designed to make us want things we don't have or in some instances, can't have. Vacations we can't afford, dresses we can't fit into, people we'll never look like. But it's because we can't have them that we want them even more. It's almost like the opportunity or possibility is just slightly outside of our reach. These aspirational qualities are what support the luxury consumer market.

Instead of taking the vacations or wearing the clothes ourselves we read about them or listen to or watch them. We close our eyes and imagine where we might go if we had all the money and the time in the world.

We look outside the window at work and see the rain and think, we wish we were cosied up by a log fire somewhere in the countryside. Tea and biscuits would be sitting on the glass table next to us. We would be comfortably spread out on a big, soft couch with fabulous quilts covering us, big pillows underneath our heads.

Or we think how nice would it be to be somewhere warm and delicious. Lying in a hammock under a weeping willow tree. The remains of lunch would be sitting out on the table next to us, a glass filled halfway with rose beneath us, an open book face down our chest as we allowed ourselves to doze off in the middle of the afternoon.

We flip the page in our Vogue and imagine ourselves in a fabulous summer dress, walking down the Champs Elysee in Paris on the way to meet a beautiful man to drink tea and eat macarrons with at La Duree. And then we look around ourselves and realise that we are actually at our desk and it's not even time for lunch yet.

But instead of feeling sorry for ourselves we recreate the perfect vacation destinations in our own home. We buy chic garden furniture where we can enjoy weekend brunches and dinners all summer long. We put a big couch on our terrace where we can bask in the sun when the weather permits. We strip down our chairs and paint them in a rustic blue that makes us feel like we are in French country or even a Greek island. We open up our windows, plant our flower boxes and let the feeling of summer sweep into our lives.

Who needs all the glam when you can relax in the comfort of your own home?
