Indian Tower Billows Into Mumbai
Designed by Singapore based architects P&T Group, this new skyscraper in India has gone through a string of redesigns since its announcement could be used as an effective timeline charting the current economic boom there.
Named the Raheja Legend, the tower will stand at 40 storeys, have prominent position in the centre of the suburb of Worli in Mumbai, and is being developed by K Raheja Universal.
It first inception was as a rather drab and uninspiring concrete tower that looked more like some sort of industrial building that was set to be painted an atrocious shade of blue.
As the growth continued, the towers next transformation came in the form of a slightly more glitzy semi glazed affair which had been slightly stretched upwards and favoured the art deco style currently being favoured through India but still lacked the wow factor.
Then late last year its final shiny form was finally settled on and something of a star was born that sports a fully glazed façade taking its inspiration from what the architect has described as "the billowing wind-filled sails of boats along the Bombay coastline.".
Unusually, this final design came after construction on the project had already begun so the tower rises from a podium that has stayed the same through all of the towers design phases giving the lower levels a definite squared appearance.
On top of the podium a gardened area features. From here the tower heads skyward its facades punctuated in the centres with balconies giving a laddered kind of effect. As it reaches its peak the glazing flares outwards from the tower giving it its 'sail' look.
The tower is set to play host to luxury condominiums and will have the usual recreational facilities expected in today's modern build. It has even managed to win the developers the prestigious Best Developer - Residential Award (Future) design at Cityscape India 2007 last December despite being unbuilt. All being well completion is expected in 2009.
